Andalusía, Spain 822-1492 AD. Andalusia experienced
a "Golden Age" of civilization. It was an unparalleled time
in history when Muslims, Christians and Jews lived in harmony, borrowing liberally from each other's cultures. Andalusian music, which joyfully embraces the traditional sounds of North Africa, Spain, and the Middle East took root and grew out of this time, Ziryab is considered its founder.

Far from Baghdad arrived Ziryab-talented musician, poet, singer and celebrated genius of his time. Ziryab's brilliant musical ability gained him invitation from Prince Caliph al-Hakam I, to be entertainer of the court.

Like a seed on fertile soil, Ziryab began to flower in Andalucia finding the land and atmosphere that surrounded it nurturing for his soul. He composed his songs late into the night, accompanied by two servants, both playing lute. During those magical evenings, amidst moon and fresh air, Ziryab expertly wove together 24 nubas, one for each hour of the day, much like the classical ragas of India.

Today the passion fueled, multi-cultural Layali El Andalus Ensemble is bringing back the spirit of old Andalucia together with all of the love, joy, warmth, and excitement that so defined it. Layali El Andalus features world-class classically trained musician and Moroccan native, Rachid Halihal.
